Geographic Information Systems
Geographic Information Systems
(GIS) store and manage spatial (location-based) data. The Ecological
Monitoring and Mapping Laboratory, located in the U.J. Noblet School
of Forestry and Wood Products, provides GIS services for the GEM Center
for Science and Environmental Outreach. A GIS database developed for the
entire Upper Peninsula aids GEM clients in making informed land-use
decisions of all kinds. The Center also provides GIS-related technical
assistance and custom data analysis and maps to the public. The
following are some GEM GIS projects:
- Training of and assistance to
U.P. health departments for the Michigan Source Water Assessment
Program
- Production of maps for a
coastal zone planning atlas of five western U.P. counties
- Assistance to an ecological
mapping project in the eastern U.P.
- Publication of Vulnerability
of the Spring Creek Aquifer to Pollution for the City of
Ironwood, Ironwood Charter Township, and Big Powderhorn Lodging
Association
